Slinging Ink: Poem

Estella

Something small: a lightbulb nestled
inside a rusting steel cage, furiously
illuminating the cornice, the porch,
waiting for the shadow to drop
within its boundaries. I am scared
of the next poem to come after this,
as if everything that follows
this tiny electric star is nothing
more than a futile battle against
the encroaching outline of the dark.
